However, if you want better "bang" you have to fork out more hard earned "bucks" so it's a good all rounder. I wouldn't recommend it for the high powered exec, but if you want a practical, powerful desktop replacement that you can shove in a drawer to save space or a machine for light travel it's a bargain at just £549 inc VAT from PC World this Easter - that's £250 off.
Unfortunately, the HD DVD drive is what it says on the tin "HD" ie. Toshiba's standard that recently lost out to Sony's Blu-Ray. Still, you're not paying extra for that and it will read all your software and "Fisher price" DVDs no problem so what's there to complain about?

Apple have launched the world's thinnest notebook, called the MacBook Air. It isn't a cheap laptop - but we thought you'd like to hear more.

MacBook Air UK

The MacBook Air has a fresh, brand new ultra compact thin design. Accoding to Apple, the Air is the thinnest notebook computer available, and indeed it's remarkably sleek. At its widest point, it's a hair over three-quarters of an inch (that's 1.94cm) and it's very light, weighing in at exactly 1.36kg.

The new model Macs are equipped with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, offer larger hard drives and ship with 2GB of memory as standard in most models. All MacBooks and MacBook Pros can now house up to 4GB of memory, making them ideal for the multimedia apps such as Photoshop and Cubase that have long made Macs the creative man's (and wo-man's) tool of choice.

A far cry from the modest little EEE PC we just brought up. But, if you need a powerful and reliable tool for multimedia on the road here's the lowdown.

MacBook Air

Light, small and super thin.

Base processor is a 1.6 Core 2 Duo.

2 Gb memory

80 Gb hard drive

5 hours batt

13 inch screen

£1,199

Needless to say at less than 2cm thick, the MacBook Air doesn't have a built in optical drive. Instead, you can use a remote optical drive which makes living without a built-in drive much easier than the traditional docking station alternatives (if you've had a docking station, you'll know what I mean).

Here comes the cheap bit. Education offers. Students and teachers can save up to 8% on Macs and up to 80% on Apple Software products!

Today I'm talking about the Eee PCPC701 - a smart little Linux-based laptop.
Linux! Arghh!
You say... but give it a shot. It's cheap as chips and easy to use, opening up a brave new world with easy Web access on the go. This smart little box is great for web browsing, checking email and social networking. You can even make calls with skype or instant messenger. The Eee pc is also great for students and schoolkids, with pres-installed features a host of tools to facilitate student homework.

Eee PC the flexible friend

Eee it's a PC

Speaking of students, it's shock-proof design. Best not to through it at the teacher, but it's a tough little box and it'll take aknock or two more than your average low cost laptop.

The little laptop is powered by an Intel Ulta Low Voltage Celeron M Processor, which gives it a respectable battery life. It's quoted as "900MHz capable", in other words they don't ship at top speed but you could clock it by visiting BIOS.

The Eee PC features built-in wireless networking, sound and a media reader for Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia Card (MMC). Shockingly , your new best friend also has a built-in webcam and 2 year warranty.

New best friend - have you lost it?
Well, take a look. The ASUS Eee PC is very compact, just 7" and weighs less than 1 kg allowing you to be truly mobile. Bumps and shocks are no longer issues. And like a dog, it's dependable - it uses a solid - state disk for unparalleled shock protection and reliability. Eee PC will not fetch your paper, but BBC News looks pretty good even at 7".

Fact: The new ASUS Eee PC actually weighs less than a Harry Potter novel!

Easy on the pocket - Priced at £186 and £219 inc VAT the Eee PC is one of the lowest priced notebooks on the market. The cheap little laptop is:

Easy to use - The new ASUS Quick launcher & one click intuitive user-friendly interface

Easy to carry - Weighs less than 1kg and it comes with a free carry case.

Easy on the pocket

Intel Mobile processor

512MB RAM / 4GB Hard disk space - this is DDR2 RAM so it's fast!

SD(HC)card reader

802.11 b/g wireless connectivity

Integrated Webcam

2 Year Collect and Return warranty

These laptops sold out in the US over Christmas, now the early adopters over here are picking them up.

I love it. I like Linux, but I'm no expert and it works for me. If you want a business laptop replacement it's not for you because it's a Linux box and you probably find it difficult to stay compatible with a Windows-based office using MS Office suite. If you're looking for a multimedia or gaming machine it's not for you because it's only got a 4Gb hard drive.

But if you have schoolkids, want to take note in lectures, work in IT or want a faithful companion for browsing the web you've just found it.

Got your Asus Eee PC for just £218 here and join the consumer revolution!

Sony's digital entertainment laptop with a Blu-ray disc drive, HDMI connectivity, high powered processor and an incredibly large hard drive. This small laptop is a multimedia special, ideal for watching high resolution Blu-Ray DVDs (not surprisingly being pushed by Sony) which are higher resolution that standard DVDs and in competition with High Definition (HD). The WXGA (Widescreen high resolution) screen and huge hard drive reflect its multimedia capabilities - although bear in mind it isn't stricly (err.. at all) legal to rip a DVD onto the large hard drive!

Other than the fancy features the memory is generous - 2 Gb of very fast DDR2 667 MHz RAM. That's even enough to run Vista - which you might aswell get used to because it's going to be standard soon enough - and to tinker with 5 mb photos from your 10 Megapixel Sony digital camera. Speaking of cameras, this cheaper than usual premium Sony laptop has the obligatory MemoryStick drive.

A dual core processor ticks another box, although pretty standard these days. It does, whoever have an 800MHz FSB - this means it is free from a common bottleneck when communicating with the rest of your computer.

One for the desk drawer or young professional's IKEA room plan. Not half bad for under £1,000 inc VAT.

Here's the spec: Sony VAIO Intel Core 2 Duo T7300

Users can store up to 110 minutes of high-definition video recorded in 1920 mode, almost 6 hours of HD video when shooting in 1440 LP mode, and more than 4000 still pictures in 10 Megapixel resolution.

Sony 16Gb Memorystick

The 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media, is the optimal recording media for HD content because of its ability to quickly and easily transfer large amounts of video content between devices. The 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media can be removed from the camcorder and inserted directly into the Memory Stick slot of a PC or laptop or in a compatible adaptor. In Europe, for the initial launch promotion, it will be bundled with a handy USB adaptor - making it even easier to transfer files from your devices onto your PC for editing and sharing content.

The 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media will be available in March 2008. It could prove a useful asset for laptops, adding portable storage, media transfer and low latency diskspace.

Tip: If you're thinking of getting a 16Gb Memorystick then look out for the following:

Does your device support such large memory?

Is your device compatible with "Memory Stick PRO Duo" - it's evolved a few times?

Do you need Memory Stick or would waiting a few months for a cheaper alternative do better?
Going on the experience of sales at Cheap Laptops and immediate colleagues, friends and family ACER are a real contender for affordable but capable laptops.

But why is that? Well, for just £352.49 (we musn't forget the obligatory 49p...) you can get your hands on an Acer Aspire 5051WLMi. Now, that's an ACER laptop with economy in mind - ie. you might "aspire" to upgrade to a Travelmate, Lamborghini etc.

What do you get?
For the price it is an impressive package powered by a powerful 2GHz AMD Turion 64 low power processor supported by 1 Gb RAM.

Tabletop laptop

Unusually for laptops it also has a 120 Gb hard drive and a built in DVD +/- RW. Not bad eh? Well, that's the one reason why ACER seem to be killing off Toshiba's long term domination of desktop replacement notebook PCs.

I like to call these laptops "tabletops" because they have quote high end processors and aren't ideal for travel / mobility but can still be popped away in the drawer once you've finished doing your online shopping from Tesco, ordered your wife (or partner!) some sexy lingerie to keep you out the doghouse and poked fun at friends on Facebook.

All of which moves us swiftly on to display.
Can I watch DVDS?
Well, this little laptop has a 14.1" WXGA monitor. That's Wide screen XGA in English and yes, good for personal DVD viewing but perhaps you would fork out for a 17" if you want to share. ACER laptops are alway fully featured and the cheaper models are no exception.
SSDs offer several advantages over traditional hard disks, being lighter, quieter, less power-hungry and more robust because they contain no moving parts. Most of all, solid state drives are FAST. That is VERY FAST. Why is this?

Today's hard drives are advanced and theirin lies the problem. They are complex and can (as we all know) go wrong. This is because they use old electromechanical and magnetic technology. Inside a hard drive a disk (or plate) spins round by a servo motor and data is read from the magnetic tracks on the disk by a head. Sound familiar? Yes, this is how the almost extinct floppy drives of yesteryear worked.

HP to fit SSD drives

Over time, the capacity of hard drives has increased (120 - 300Gb is standard and 500Gb - 1Tb is not uncommon now). At the same time, the rate at which data can be transferred to and from the drives has increased. After many years of slow advances with parallel ATA, data can now can be read from disks extremely quickly using the serial (SATA) standard(s). These higher transfer rates make is easier and quicker to load large files such as audio or video. But they are still not great for work such as editing or for running lots of applications at the same time on your computer (multitasking). This is because the read head has to be continuously repositioned to read data from different areas of the hard drive and moving between these can take a long time (in computer terms). Lost? Read on...

To put this in perspective, your computer (the microprocessor) only has to wait for a few microseconds (= millionths of a second) to read data from your memory (the RAM). To read some data from the hard drive typically takes milliseconds (= thousandths of a second) because a motor has to spin a physical disk round to get to the location where it can read data from the disk. The "seek time" is one technical term that relates to this delay, which is caused my the intertia of moving around mechanical parts (as opposed to "solid state" meaning nothing moves). SCSI drives used in servers and multimedia machines have been faster for some time, one reason for this is that they have a faster interface with the computer but the other reason is that they are designed to spin round faster than old IDE drives. That's why a 7,200 rpm drive beats a 5,400 rpm drive - it finds the data you want more quickly.

Finally! I hear you moan. Solid State Drive (SSD). Well, you could just call them "giant memorysticks". I have been waiting for decades (I know, it's pathetic) for these drives because I'm fed up waiting around for 1000 times longer than I have to and I am fed up of the death rattle from a dying electro-mechanical hard drive. Whilst it is not pointless spending your hard earned cash on DDR memory, dual core processors and the rest in an effort to increase performance - you are "wasting away" the dynamic performance of the system by plugging the kit into a "chug-chug" electro-mechanical drive!

This makes them an ideal upgrade for notebook manufacturers, but until recently they have been prohibitively expensive.

A 64GB NAND flash drive will be an optional upgrade for the Compaq 2510p and 2710p series, available in the UK from November. The exact price of the upgrade has not been released, although US reports suggest it could cost as much as £500.

In the meanwhile, Dell are offering solid state drives with laptops. For example, a 30Gb solid state drive is optional with the very affordable but high performance XPS M1130 or you can get a 32Gb SSD drive to plug straight into you current laptop for £446.68.

One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a non-profit organization with the mission to help eradicate world poverty by providing every child access to knowledge and modern forms of education, even if that child lives in the most rural and primitive environment, today announced it has authorized mass production of the XO laptop, based on the release of the final Beta-4 (B4) engineering model. This triggers the supply chains of 800 parts that come together and rollout off the assembly line in October.

Cheap laptops for children

OLPC’s XO B4 laptops are among the most durable and innovative laptop computers ever designed. The machines are engineered to withstand the diverse and often harsh environmental conditions found in developing countries -- from the dust and heat of the Libyan desert to the daily downpours of the Brazilian rainforests. Additionally, unlike any other laptop on the market today, the XO features a sunlight-readable display and the ability to operate in areas without access to electricity.

“There is a lot of debate in technology circles about the cost of bringing laptop computers into the developing world,” said Walter Bender, OLPC president of software and content. “But the real debate shouldn’t be centered on cost – it should be about design. A computer designed for Western office environments simply won’t be able to withstand the conditions found in much of Africa, Asia and South America. Further, children engaged in learning have a different set of needs from a laptop than an office worker.”

The B4 laptops feature three innovations that are unlike any laptop being manufactured in the world today:

Technologically revolutionary display is fully readable in bright sunlight. The display is among the highest quality of any laptop currently being produced regardless of cost and is so clear that it comes close to a paper-like reading experience for users. The B4 has a new hinge to allow for an increased tilt of the screen for an improved viewing angle.

Rugged durability to withstand the most severe weather and environmental conditions. The enhanced B4 machines are more rugged: they can be used outdoors—where children tend to spend most of their time—in the rain, sitting in a puddle of water after a downpour, or in a cloud of dust. The case also features a Wi-Fi antenna design that not only gives the laptop superior Wi-Fi range, but also protects it from falls as high as five feet.

Engineered to operate “off the grid.” The B4 computers can be powered by numerous alternative power sources, including a pull cord, a solar panel, or a solar-powered multi-battery charger at the school. The B4 machines use less than one watt of power when being used as an e-book and can operate for more than 12 hours on its battery.

The B4 machines are the result of a collaborative effort between OLPC, AMD, Brightstar, BT, Citigroup, Chi Mei Corporation, eBay, Google, Intel, Marvell, News Corporation, Nortel, Quanta Computer, Red Hat, SES Astra, Underwriters Laboratories, and the global Open Source community. The B4 machines feature the AMD Geode LX processor, improved keyboard and touch pad, many electrical and mechanical enhancements, and an individualized brightly colored XO logo on the back. Children will be able to select from a wide range of colors for the logo so they can readily identify their laptop in a crowded classroom.

“Since the inception of the XO laptop more than two years ago, AMD has been committed to helping the One Laptop per Child program succeed,” said Gustavo Arenas, Corporate Vice President, High-Growth Markets and Innovations, AMD. “We are proud to serve as a technology partner to such a noble and life-affecting project. The B4 machine paves the way for a final XO laptop that will change the lives of millions of children—a mission that compliments AMD’s own 50x15 Initiative, whose goal is to enable 50 percent of the world’s population with affordable, accessible Internet connectivity and computing capabilities by the year 2015.”

The B4 laptops will go through a final round of testing by developers, hardware experts, OLPC technical volunteers, and some of the pilot schools around the world already using the B2 machines.

Other technical enhancements to the B4 include a faster, lower-power AMD processor: the Geode LX-700, more memory: 256 MB replace the previous 128 mb of SDRAM and more Flash: 1 GB replacing 0.5GB.

One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is a non-profit organization created to design, manufacture, and distribute laptops that are sufficiently inexpensive to provide every child in the world access to knowledge and modern forms of education. The laptops will be sold to governments and issued to children by schools on a basis of one laptop per child. These machines will be rugged, Linux-based, and so energy efficient that hand-cranking alone will generate sufficient power for operation. Mesh networking will give many machines Internet access from one connection.

OLPC is based on constructionist theories of learning pioneered by Seymour Papert and later Alan Kay, as well as the principles expressed in Nicholas Negroponte's Being Digital. The corporate members are AMD, Brightstar, Chi Mei Corporation, eBay, Google, Intel, Marvell, News Corporation, Nortel, Quanta Computer, Red Hat and SES Astra.
